About the NGO

Nishakt jan kalyan sewa samiti was established in 07/08/1998 with the sole vision of providing free and quality education to disabled children of the rural areas of Chhattisgarh. Our NGO is affiliated by the department of Social Welfare Chhattisgarh government. With this vision our NGO has established ‘Special school for the Blind, Deaf and Dumb residential school for children’, working since 1998. We provide free of cost education, residence, food, clothing with special emphasis on their health and recreational activities including music, dance, sports etc. The disabled students from the socially backward class are highly benefitted as we tend to provide them special high-quality education within their reach, as our institute is situated in the rural area, Gram-panchayat Pamgarh. The students are trained by specially trained teachers in brail and sign languages. Students are also trained in music and sports and different skill development programmes. The school also takes part in different competitions and festivals in which the students have also won several prices. Including 1st price in archery in National Abilympics 2007 held in Mumbai. Special emphasis is given on the health of students by organizing regular health check-up camps by Government Doctors, and providing free medicines to the children. We provide special instruments for the students such as hearing aid for the deaf and dumb students, walking stick for blind students, special brail books and copies for the blind students etc. Students are taught drawing, painting, music regularly. Students are also trained under skill development programmes, in order to make them self-dependant.

About Our Secretary

Mr.Duje Ram Jyoti

Secretary

Mr. Duje Ram Jyoti is the director and secretary of the NGO ‘Nishakt Jan Kalyan Sewa Samiti’, Pamgarh, distt. Janjgir-Champa, Chhattisgarh. He was born in a small village Kosir of Tehsil Pamgarh, Janjgir-Champa in 1969. He was born in a very poor family to father Late. Shri Sahettar Jyoti and mother Late. Smt. Bisahin Bai Jyoti. Parents of Mr. Duje Ram never attended school because of their poor social condition and hence relied on agriculture and farming and also worked as brick worker in other states for the sustenance of the family. The parents also took Mr. Duje, who is youngest among 3 of children, to the work, and travelled different states as per the requirement of their work in brick factories. Mr. Duje had strong interest in studying from a very young age, but because of the financial problem and regular emigration of the family from one state to other made it very challenging for Mr. Duje to study. But there is a saying, where there’s a will, there’s a way, hence apart from his impecunious situation, Mr. Jyoti had a strong will of studying and therefore he took help from relatives and friends and after a long term of hard work and determination, he continued studying and completed his schooling and then Graduation in Arts. He later completed his Masters Degree in Social Science after marriage. At the age of 25 he married Smt. Bhagwati Jyoti in court. They were classmates in school and knew each other since school days. Smt. Bhagwati is Physically disabled, and is a government employee working as Head Master in Government Middle School, Bhadra, Pamgarh. Both Mr. Duje and Smt. Bhagwati had affection and devotion towards disabled persons and always looked to serve them whenever needed. Carrying forward this devotion, they decided to establish a special institute for disabled children coming from poor background in Pamgarh, being the native place of the couple. Early years of the institute were very difficult and challenging, providing free education and accommodation along with special studying instruments to disabled students was difficult without Government support. Then also with help of donations and self-contribution they carried the work of serving the disabled children. The institute has accomplished its major objective of educating and empowering the disabled but still there is lack of fund, and financial problem persists. We look forward for your help and Donations.

26 YEARS OF SERVICE TO CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Our Approach

Our organization strives to obtain opportunities offered by the State and Central Governments for children with special needs who are often deprived of such opportunities. We make use of various schemes and seek support from like-minded individuals and funding bodies to provide free education, shelter, food, and clothing, and give special emphasis on their health as well as recreational, sports and cultural activities. We work towards building the capacities of differently-abled individuals to enable them to become self-reliant.

Operational area of the organization

Area Profile

Janjgir-Champa is a district located in the central region of Chhattisgarh, which is mostly covered by tropical forests. The district receives medium rainfall, with an average of 1147.4 mm. During the summer season, the temperature rises, sometimes up to 49°C, while it drops down to 8°C during the winter season. The soil type is mostly yellow, and agricultural production is significant here, with paddy being the main crop. The district has substantial mineral deposits of Limestone, Dolomite, etc. A considerable part of the population of the district is daily wage earners in the fields of agriculture and industries. However, many people depend on animal husbandry and allied trades. During the off-season, the poor landless and marginal cultivators migrate to other areas in search of jobs. The profile of community health is very poor, with the nutrition level of the children being miserable. Women and children are the worst sufferers. The overall literacy rate of the district is 78.13%, and the local language spoken here is Chhattisgarhi. Most of the population of the area are Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, who are underprivileged and trapped by the vicious circle of poverty in generations.

Our Needs

Our institute majorly runs with the help of grant-in-aid provided by the Department of Social Welfare, Chhattisgarh government. But the grant is not sufficient for the proper functioning of the institute. Due to lack of funds, the basic facilities such as food, furniture, special instruments and aid and hostel facilities for the students is being compromised. Therefore, we need:

Our struggle And Our Appeal

The primary and sole vision of our NGO is to provide special education to disabled children from the rural backward areas of Chhattisgarh, who are mostly unaware about the special educational criteria of the disabled. Because, most of the children studying in our institute belong from socially backward rural class, (mainly Schedule Cast and Schedule tribe) who mostly relies on agricultural and farming practices to run families. Such families are unable to afford education in cities and urban areas, and hence remain uneducated. So, our main goal is to provide free special education to the children from rural areas within their reach. Our institute is situated in Gram Panchayat, Pamgarh, which is a rural area in Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh comprising families of mostly Schedule Cast, Schedule tribe and Other Backward Classes. So, the disabled students of the area and nearby areas are highly benefitted under our educational program. Our institute is the first and only platform working in the field of special education and rehabilitation of disabled children. The students are taught by specially trained teachers in braille and sign language and are provided special equipment and instruments for the study purpose. Other than that, we also train our students in music, sports, skill-development and other co-curricular activities and hence overall personality development of the student is emphasized. Our Institute was established in 1998, and for consecutive 5 years the school served without Government grants-in-aid and ran only with self-contribution and donations. Since the establishment of our institute, total of 401 disabled students have been benefitted for which the students were provided free education, accommodation, food, clothing and medicine etc. more than 50% of the students are now pursuing higher education, 45 of the pass-out students are working in Government sectors and about 65 students had become self-dependant from their private businesses and other works. The major outcome of our work is to empower the disabled persons of our rural area in order to make them self-dependant and we have been accomplishing it successfully. We look forward to serve more disabled people by Education and Awareness.
